A novelist, editor, and professor, Toni Morrison wrote about intimate relationships and the experiences of Black Americans while drawing on African American folklore, music, and storytelling traditions. Raised in a working-class family, she developed a love of reading as a child and later worked as both a publishing editor and university professor. Her novels, including Beloved and Song of Solomon, explore themes of love, beauty, friendship, death, and the search for truth while helping readers connect with their history and community. In 1993, she became the first African American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
