Consciousness is power. Tomorrow’s world is yours to build
Yuri Kochiyama

A political activist who dedicated her life to social change, Kochiyama and her family were sent to a concentration camp in Jerome, Arkansas in 1943 under President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066—an experience that would forever connect her with those engaged in political struggle. After moving to New York, her activism expanded through the Asian American, Black, and Third World movements for human rights, and a transformative friendship and political alliance with Malcolm X.
