A queer Xicana poet, writer, and feminist theorist, Anzaldúa explored identity, language, borders, and Mexican American liberation in her work. After witnessing discrimination against Spanish speakers, she began writing about Mexican-American liberation while balancing farm work, school, and creative pursuits following her father’s death. She edited This Bridge Called My Back with Cherríe Moraga and wrote Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, becoming known for blending multiple forms of English and Spanish in her writing. She refused to write in only one language, declaring, “As long as I have to accommodate the English speakers rather than having them accommodate me, my tongue will be illegitimate.
