I’m going to speak where and when I wish. No man will stop me
Marie Equi

A physician and activist, Marie Equi dedicated her medical practice to caring for working-class women and children, often without charge, while advocating for birth control, workers’ rights, and prison reform. In 1913, after being trampled by police while supporting striking cannery workers, she said the experience pushed her toward anarchism. She lived openly in lesbian relationships and raised an adopted daughter with her partner. In 1916 she was arrested under the Espionage Act for opposing World War I, serving a year in prison before returning to a quieter life in Portland.
